Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs), also known as Volatile Fatty Acids (VFAs), are a class of organic fatty acids with a carbon chain length ranging from 1 to 6. They include acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, isobutyric acid, valeric acid, and isovaleric acid.


Primarily produced by anaerobic bacteria in the colon through the fermentation of dietary fibers and indigestible sugars, the types and amounts of short-chain fatty acids generated in the intestines vary based on fermentation substrates, bacterial species, and other factors. As crucial metabolic byproducts of intestinal microbiota, SCFAs play diverse biological roles, such as providing energy, regulating energy metabolism, participating in signal transduction, improving cardiovascular health, alleviating symptoms of diabetes, maintaining intestinal metabolic integrity, and modulating gut microbiota and immune function.


In plants, short-chain fatty acids serve as essential flavor compounds and nutritional substances. They play a significant role in the aroma of tobacco. In animals, these acids can increase the feed intake of pregnant sows and milk production in lactating sows, thereby enhancing overall productivity. In silage, acetic acid and propionic acid are primarily used as preservatives for storage and preservation, affecting the palatability and digestibility of the feed.
