Central carbon metabolism
Central Carbon Metabolism (CCM), traditionally, includes the Glycolytic Pathway (Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway, EMP), Pentose Phosphate Pathway (PPP), and Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle (TCA). CCM is a major source of energy for organisms and provides precursor substances for other metabolic processes within the body. The enzymatic activity and protein expression levels of key enzymes in CCM exhibit genetic distinctiveness, similar to phenotypes, and can be used for broad species differentiation. Given the crucial role of CCM in all living organisms, studying the expression of its metabolites is of paramount importance. Ion chromatography-mass spectrometry can be employed for high-throughput detection of the content of various substances in the central carbon metabolism pathways, and data analysis can determine the relationships between these substances.
Intermediate products of the TCA cycle can serve as substrates for the biosynthesis of amino acids, nucleic acids, and cell wall components required for plant growth and development. Abnormalities in CCM can impact the growth and development of plants. In animal husbandry, CCM abnormalities not only affect the growth and development of animals but also influence animal quality. Given the significant role of CCM in all living organisms, studying the expression of its metabolites holds great importance.
